A Virginia aircraft testing facility utilizes compressed air to test aircraft devices, throttling it from the source starting at 3,800 psi down to 1,650 psi down to 5 psi. Throttling is accomplished with valves, which freeze during the throttling as the pressure is reduced. This results in system condensation that causes water to drip on the floor, creating an unsafe, undesirable condition in the facility.

A large South Dakota electric power plant needed to upgrade the 10-year-old heating system on an external storage tank that provides lube oil for the facility’s natural gas turbines. The turbines start up more efficiently when the lube oil is warmer, between 70° and 90° F, so the heater plays a critical function in the cold weather months to ensure that the system operates properly. The facility hoped to install the new heater without having to drain the 3,000-gallon tank, which would have added the expense of an outside contractor for temporary storage, plus a standard product.

A machines and tooling company was asked to retrofit an existing conveyor system that used a quartz bulb heating design in a two-stage oven (trickle machine impregnator/curing system) that provided resin impregnation for motor armatures. The system’s existing heating system was fragile and subject to breakage from falling tools or parts, leading to system shutdowns and failures. The manufacturer also desired a system that provided finer controls to maintain even temperatures throughout the line.

This solar energy producer uses hot oil and heat exchangers to heat various process materials in the manufacture of polysilicon for solar applications. The company’s large, gas fired hot-oil system, however, did not meet new state emission standards. Upgrading to low-emission gas burners was not an option, however, due to high costs and impact on production. With the state deadline to comply with the new emission standards looming, the manufacturer was pressed to find a solution quickly.

An Ohio manufacturer of cryogenic systems for use in the aerospace industry had a critical need for a methane conversion system under design. The application required converting liquid methane from an extremely low temperature – 201° Rankine, or -269° F – to a gaseous state at 540° Rankine, or 80° F. In addition, the methane stored at 15 pounds per square inch absolute (psia) had to be converted with less than a 1.0 psi pressure drop across the system. System requirements necessitated design of a special pressure vessel and critical temperature control.

A waxing system on an industrial packaging corrugated paper line at a Tennessee facility could not reliably maintain the required 200° F supply and return line temperatures, causing downtime and slowing production. The supply lines feed rollers that apply wax to the corrugated paper; excess wax feeds back into the waxing lines supply tank via return lines. Maintaining the wax at the prescribed temperature was vital to line flow.

A colonial-style two-story municipal building in a Cleveland suburb was beset with build-ups of snow, ice and moisture in the gutters during the cold winter months. As a result, large icicles hung from the roof lines, posing a danger to pedestrians. The City wanted a roof and gutter heating system to alleviate the problem and they wanted the system to operate invisibly rather than via a traditional serpentine roof & heating cable pattern.

The cooling towers of a Virginia medical facilitys HVAC system required an upgrade to ensure freeze protection. If the pipes froze, and, potentially burst, the entire facility was at risk of shut-down. The existing systems water lines were controlled by a mechanical thermostat that provided basic on/off functions, but no alarm features. As the system was being redesigned, the availability of a digital thermostat at nearly the same price provided a significant upgrade in terms of both reliability and alarm features.
