The Operation
The customer uses piping and metal parts in the fabrication of high speed turbines and compressors. These parts must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any contamination before production takes place. In addition, the customer also rebuilds used turbines and compressors. Parts from these units require degreasing and corrosion removal.
Prior to recent changes, parts were soaked individually in small tanks containing stripper, degreaser and rust preventative solutions which make up a multi-step pickling operation. Each tank was maintained at elevated temperatures with electric over the side immersion heaters.

The OperationUp to four sheets of paper are laminated at one time by the press, from either 19'/1,," or 241/x" rolls, depending upon which width is being made. The adhesive agent is Sunoco 1290Y Wax. The consumption of wax when running at full speed is 100 lb. in 15minutes.
Two wax tanks are used: One on the press containing 225 gallons and a 75 gallon supply tank. Wax is held at melting temperature in supply tank, and poured into the machine tank as needed.

Heater operation is initiated each working day morning at 3:00 by a time clock. By 5:30 A.M. the salt bath has reached 300 ° F., then operation is automatically placed under the control of a thermostat which has been preset the night before to a maximum of 700 ° F. Thermostatic control is in two stages: on temperature drop from preset temperature six of the 15 heaters are energized; drop to 21° below set temperature brings on remaining nine heaters. On temperature rise action is reversed. This arrangement provides more uniform temperature control and better performance with broader load distribution.

The OperationThe customer needed to testing pressure relief valves used in the fuel lines of jet turbine engines. The valves must withstand test operating stresses of 12 psi at 500° F. A heavy-gage pressure tank was designed and built so that the pressure would drop no more than 4 psi in one hour. The tank is equipped with a pressure gage mounted on top. During testing the valve to be tested is installed at the bottom of the tank.

A Virginia aircraft testing facility utilizes compressed air to test aircraft devices, throttling it from the source starting at 3,800 psi down to 1,650 psi down to 5 psi. Throttling is accomplished with valves, which freeze during the throttling as the pressure is reduced. This results in system condensation that causes water to drip on the floor, creating an unsafe, undesirable condition in the facility.

A Missouri coal-fired power generating station needed to reduce coal dust in an onsite tunnel. Approximately 9,000 rail cars of coal pass through the tunnel each month, dumping coal for power generation.
A large South Dakota electric power plant needed to upgrade the 10-year-old heating system on an external storage tank that provides lube oil for the facility’s natural gas turbines. The turbines start up more efficiently when the lube oil is warmer, between 70° and 90° F, so the heater plays a critical function in the cold weather months to ensure that the system operates properly. The facility hoped to install the new heater without having to drain the 3,000-gallon tank, which would have added the expense of an outside contractor for temporary storage, plus a standard product.

The cooling towers of a Virginia medical facilitys HVAC system required an upgrade to ensure freeze protection. If the pipes froze, and, potentially burst, the entire facility was at risk of shut-down. The existing systems water lines were controlled by a mechanical thermostat that provided basic on/off functions, but no alarm features. As the system was being redesigned, the availability of a digital thermostat at nearly the same price provided a significant upgrade in terms of both reliability and alarm features.
