As an oilfield facilities design consultant, I am asked to design complete surface facilities to process oil and water. In many cases the separation of the two liquids can be incomplete, creating an economic condition, where the owner is penalized for "off-spec" (low quality) crude oil. The pricing penalty can be onerous; up to 35%! To avoid this issue, I include Chromalox electric immersion heaters, in the oil storage tanks. When combined with a tank sidewall mixer, the heaters do an exceptional job of uniformly heating the off-spec crude thereby reducing its viscosity so the water of emulsion can readily separate, eliminating the off-spec condition and the associated pricing penalties. This has worked well in dozens of plants throughout the oil industry.
