Thermoplastic Enclosure Solves Space and Moisture Issues

The Challenge
This customer manufactures specialty parts washing systems. Some washing equipment models are large enough to handle cleaning a diesel locomotive engine. The parts washers use screw plug immersion heaters to heat a mixture of water and detergent. The capacity of the machine dictates how many screw plug heaters are required, as well as the required voltage and wattage. There were two challenges to address. First, there was limited space for the heater installation, and tight clearance. Second, a moisture resistant enclosure was needed which would be able to withstand the harsh operating environment typical for their equipment. Chromalox was able to provide the solution with their new thermoplastic terminal enclosure.  

The Solution
The limited clearance issue was addressed with the heaters ability to be installed without the terminal enclosure. The design enables the installer to disconnect the enclosure, tighten the heater into the threaded connection using a deep well socket, and then re-attach the enclosure to the plug. Once re-attached to its gasketed connection, the terminal enclosure retains its E4 capability. Rotation of the enclosure to accommodate conduit location was also important, and the new design enabled the customer to rotate the enclosure to align the electrical knockouts with existing electrical conduit. The cover is also simple to install, just a ¼ turn twist and the use of a provided self-tapping screw.

The Advantages
The customer found that this enclosure design gave them flexibility, ease of installation and a moisture resistant enclosure in one product. They also required a housing material that would hold up to the rigors of use in this environment. The thermoplastic housing material is rated for use in such applications. Finally the customer had a global customer base, and multiple listing and standards were required for the enclosure.
